SCRAP MUSEUM

Ian McLean formed Scrap Musuem in 1982 while studying painting at Swinburne University. He named it because the Bakehouse Studio where the band rehearsed was full of old junk. The original lineup was Conway Savage, Andy Crowder, Rick Ferrara, Mulaim Vela and Ian McLean. McLean knew Vela from school, while Savage was recruited after a chance encounter at the Tiger Lounge in Richmond. This five-piece line-up of Scrap Museum didn't last long. Crowder left to join Honeymoon in Green and was replaced by Simon Dory in mid-1982, Conway Savage left to join The Feral Dinosaurs and by 1983 the band had evolved into a trio: McLean on bass and vocals, Mulaim Vela on guitar and Frank Borg on drums. Bassist Adam Learner (ex-International Exiles) joined the band and McLean moved to vocals where they recorded their only release ''Say Die / That Dirty, Stink'n, Unclean, Love Affair'' on the Rampant label in 1984.

Former Birthday Party drummer Phill Calvert sat in with the band in its last 6 months or so. Calvert officially decided to join when Scrap Museum morphed into Blue Ruin. Scrap Museum played alongside such iconic acts as Moodists, The Laughing Clowns and The Go-Betweens, as well as landing a series of notable supporting gigs for touring artists like Jonathon Richman and The Dead Kennedys. Conway Savage died in 2018.
